About Brian Jorgensen, P.Eng.
Open Source
I have been a software engineer since the early days of the public internet in 1996. Since that time I have delivered software projects in Perl, Cold Fusion, Java, PHP, and JavaScript.
During that time I have installed, configured, written software extensions for, and integrated systems as varied as DRA Web 2 (an Integrated Library System), uPortal, Sakai, Moodle, Alfresco, Elgg, Drupal, Joomla, SPI InTools, and IBM's Maximo.
Private Sector
My early career involved providing "dynamic" websites - this was when most websites were simply a collection of static html pages - for performers like Al Simmons and The Checkerboard Guy, and other small business owners; around this time I also worked for a small internet service provider on Vancouver Island called Island Internet.
Public Sector
In 1999 I moved to Edmonton and started with Edmonton Public Library. While at EPL I designed and implemented their first dynamic website and first web-based catalogue interface.
Other than contracts with Telus Communications and Family Law Center, during this time I worked for University of Alberta Libraries, The Alberta Library, University of Winnipeg, Athabasca University, University of Alberta Centre for Teaching and Learning, and University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
The main open source communities that I had involvement with were uPortal, Sakai, Moodle, and Elgg.
Private Sector
in 2014 I decided to shift back to the private sector in order to work on larger teams and to seek out positions with greater responsibility.
While working for Rally Engineering I wrote software that automated the assembly of document packages for a Syncrude instrumentation walk-down, I updated the user interface paradigms to more closely resemble the modern internet for an HMI project for ATCO Pipelines, and also performed a data migration project for EPCOR Wastewater.
My last involvement with Rally Engineering was a subcontracted asset management (IBM Maximo) data migration project that I helped lead at Gilead Pharmaceuticals in Edmonton.
My most recent work has focused on the ever-growing javascript ecosystem: reactjs, firebase (google's nosql database), and google apps scripts.
